Get ready fi roll wid di baddis team! Uprising is BASHY Magazine’s five-week mentorship program for Toronto and GTA-based journalists, photographers and illustrators of Jamaican descent interested in gaining digital and print publishing experience. The amalgamated work from program participants will make up the content of our ‘Diaspora: Canada’ issue. Participants will be paid an honouraria for their contributions.

Applications are opened from July 1 and will close at 11:59 PM (EST) on July 31, 2019.

Program Eligibility

  • Are a resident of Toronto or the GTA

  • Are of Jamaican descent/heritage

  • Are between 18-29 years old

  • Are able to commit to a five-week Saturday program (September 28, October 5th, October 12th, October 19th and October 26th)

  • Have an interest in or are currently working in the publishing and/or media industry

  • Want to gain digital and print publishing experience

Applicants will be notified by September 2, 2019 of their status in the program.

  • Only one application per participant will be submitted and considered. Please do not submit more than one application.

  • Your submitted application will not be shared with anyone else besides our program coordinators and funders.

Prompt The theme of the issue is "Diaspora: Canada". What have been the contributions from Jamaican-Canadians or Jamaicans who have moved to Canada. Feel free to explore the influence on history, culture, language, music, food, etc. We accept reported essays, profiles, photo essays and digital art that can be published in print in any of our five sections: Culture, Music, Style, Nyammin' and Arts. Your pitch will be in conversation with the theme. Writers: please visit our contributor page and scroll down to our pitch guide for how to format your pitch (there is no subject line but please include a working/tentative title in your pitch). Photographers and digital artists: if you're interested in pitching a photo essay/series, please see above and format your pitch similarly. If you are interested in just being assigned to a story, use this space to explain your shooting style and approach. If we are unclear about your pitch, we will contact you for more details.
